Welcome to Shake the Dust, an ethical design brand, which sources, commissions and sells hand-made, luxury homeware and accessories. Our products are created by both designers and artisans in the UK and also those who live in regions with less access to markets and opportunities to connect to customers.
Hand-made products bring a rare element of soul and craftsmanship into our homes and it is in this spirit that Shake the Dust connects you to beautiful products and their creators. Shake the Dust stands for ethical transparency without compromising style. In this respect, Shake the Dust promotes development and sustainability for both designers, producers and the industry.
In addition to offering retail opportunities through the online store and pop-ups, Shake the Dust also produces exhibitions, talks & workshops to support the development of our creative partners.
Since 2009, Shake the Dust Founder, Kathy Shenoy has worked as a design consultant collaborating with artisans in South Africa and Swaziland, building connections between developing world artistry to contemporary creative platforms.
With the support of the Prince’s Trust, Kathy set up Shake the Dust in 2012 when she moved back to London following her time living and working with creatives in Southern Africa.
With a particular interest in supporting emerging talent in places that might not have markets to support them, Kathy believes in a trade not aid philosophy; creating opportunities for mutual learning and challenging stereotypes of places, people and aesthetics.
Since launching the business Kathy has been invited to speak at Downing Street as a representative for Craft Design Entrepreneurs, to Buckingham Palace as a guest at the Queen’s Commonwealth Reception in 2013 and is in the Maserati 100, a definitive list of Britain’s most successful business leaders actively supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs.
