APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED. DESIGNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON!
As part of Alchemy Festival 2014, Shake the Dust & Southbank Centre presents ‘Design Wallah’ – an open submission showcase of South Asian contemporary design.
‘Design Wallah’ is an opportunity for designers and makers to exhibit and sell as part of the Alchemy festival at London’s iconic Southbank Centre.
Alchemy is a celebration of South Asian Arts and Culture and throughout the festival across the site there will be a South Asian food market, performances, fashion shows, pop-up restaurants and a diverse programme of art and dance. The design showcase will be housed in ‘Festival Village’, a large covered space underneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall that has previously been home to Beanotown, Designersblock, Campo Viejo’s brand event, Designers/Makers markets and much more. In addition to the design showcase and pop-up shop the Village space will also be home to performances and workshops in addition to delicious food and drink from Roti Chai .
We are looking for brands and organisations who demonstrate a clear connection or partnership with South Asian artisans and producers & the showcase places special emphasis on contemporary design; we particularly welcome projects and creatives who offer something a little different to most pre-conceived notions of what constitutes South Asian design.
Exhibitors will be selected to showcase throughout the festival from 15- 26 May based on the following criteria:
– Designers with a clear South Asian influence in their work/ product across a range of design disciplines including interiors, fashion, accessories, furniture, lighting, illustration, textiles & jewellery.
– Products that are unique, good quality, value for money and that have good provenance. Applicants are expected to have full knowledge of the source and characteristics of their products.
– Priority will be given to hand-made, ethically sourced/made and design-led work.
Design Wallah is not only a unique platform to exhibit, but also provides an opportunity to sell to thousands of visitors to Alchemy. Shake the Dust will select, curate and sell work and products on behalf of the successful applicants throughout the festival. Selected designers will not be asked to pay a showcase fee, but will be requested to deliver and collect designs/products to the venue. All work will be sold on a sale-or-return basis and the organizers will retain 50% sales commission (of retail price) on any products sold throughout the festival to cover running, operational and staffing costs.
For designers of items of higher value, that would typically have lower margins, such as artworks or furniture please contact us to negotiate commission rates on any sales.
Deadline for applications: 17:00, February 28
Selected designers announced: March 11
Installation of works: May 12- 14 (delivery details to be confirmed)
Exhibition dates: Thursday 15 May – Monday 26 May 2014.
